Doors Not Closing Properly

What to Check If Your Amana Refrigerator Door is Not Closing Properly

A door that won’t close securely can lead to temperature fluctuations, higher energy use, frost buildup, and food spoilage. The upside: most problems are simple to identify and resolve at home. Use the guidance below to find the cause and restore a consistent, reliable seal, even when you notice refrigerator doors not closing properly or a fridge not shutting properly after loading groceries.

Why Your Refrigerator Door Won’t Stay Closed

Several everyday issues can keep a door from sealing correctly. Understanding these causes helps you choose the right fix quickly when the refrigerator door won’t stay closed or the fridge door won't close after you let go.

  • Unit not level: If the refrigerator isn’t level side to side and front to back, the door may swing open or fail to sit flush. Floors can be uneven, and new installations may settle during the first few days, leading to refrigerator doors not closing properly.
  • Worn or dirty gasket: The rubber door gasket can become dirty, brittle, cracked, or warped. Even small gaps reduce suction and let warm air in, making the door feel like it won’t stay shut.
  • Obstructions inside or outside: Overfilled door bins, tall containers, mis-seated drawers, ice bin out of place, or items behind the refrigerator pressing on the door can prevent full closure.
  • Packaging Materials: Some packaging used to avoid damage during shipping could keep the door from closing. Also, if the doors were removed during installation, check to ensure they were installed correctly.  Doors that are incorrectly installed may not close or seal properly.
  • Vertical Hinge Incorrect Position: French door models have a vertically-hinged seal on the left refrigerator door.  The doors can be opened and closed either separately or together.  When the left-side door is opened, the hinged seal automatically folds inward so it is out of the way. When both doors are closed, the hinged seal automatically forms a seal between the two doors.  If it is folded outward when the door is open, fold it inward by hand before the door is closed.
