Before Loading the Dishwasher, Is it dishwasher-safe?
Knowing which materials are dishwasher-safe is crucial for maintaining the longevity of your items and ensuring efficient cleaning. Most modern dishwashers, including Amana models, can handle a variety of materials, but not everything can withstand the heat and water pressure. Common dishwasher-safe materials include glass, ceramic, and most plastics marked as dishwasher-safe. However, always check specific guidelines provided by the dishware manufacturer.
Some items should never be loaded into your dishwasher, such as wooden utensils, which can warp or crack from heat and moisture. Certain metals like copper and cast iron can be damaged or lose their finish. Delicate glassware and items not labeled as dishwasher-safe may break or shatter during the wash cycle.
Loading the Bottom Rack
Properly loading your dishwasher is essential for achieving optimal cleaning results. Start with the bottom rack, which is designed for larger and more heavily soiled items. Place pots, pans, and larger dishes at the back and sides, angled downwards for maximum water flow. Avoid stacking items, as this can obstruct the spray arms and prevent thorough cleaning. This is the correct way to load a dishwasher for the best results.
Loading the Middle Rack
Depending on the model, the middle (or top rack) is ideal for delicate items such as glasses, cups, and small bowls. Position these items upside down to prevent water pooling, and ensure they are spaced apart to allow water and detergent to reach all surfaces. If your dishwasher has adjustable tines, consider moving them to accommodate taller items or create more space for smaller glasses.
Loading the Top Rack (or 3rd Rack)
Some Amana are equipped with a 3rd rack, which is great for small items, large utensils, and other hard-to-fit items. We recommend using this rack for silverware, utensils, coffee cups, and smaller bowls. Ensure items are loaded at an angle and pointed toward the spray arms. Keeping items loaded at an angle will also help with water runoff and drying performance.
Loading Silverware
Don’t forget the utensil basket. Load forks and knives facing down to prevent injuries when unloading—separate utensils to avoid nesting, which can hinder cleaning. Place larger utensils, like serving spoons, in the top rack if the basket is full.
Use silverware basket lids to provide optimal spacing and best cleaning performance. If your silverware does not fit into the designated slots, open the lids or lift on the ends of the lids and pull to remove (depending on the silverware basket type). Mix silverware types to keep them separated. Load knives down, forks up, and alternate spoons for best cleaning results.
Additional Tips for Loading a Amana Dishwasher
Overloading the Dishwasher. Efficiently loading your dishwasher is key to achieving sparkling clean dishes. However, several common mistakes can hinder its performance. One major error is overloading your dishwasher. While it may be tempting to cram in as many dishes as possible, this can lead to inadequate water circulation and could result in unclean dishes. Ensure enough space for water and detergent to reach every item for optimal cleaning results. Learning how to load a dishwasher properly can help avoid these issues.
Blocking the spray arm. If the spray arm is blocked, water might not be able to reach all areas of the dishwasher. For instance, placing large pots or pans on the bottom rack can obstruct the spray arm, while delicate glassware should be secured on the top rack to avoid breakage. Always consult your Amana dishwasher manual for the best loading practices to ensure each item is positioned for maximum efficiency.
Pre-Rinsing the dishes. Lastly, not prepping your dishes correctly before loading can significantly affect your dishwasher's performance. Save time and energy, and refrain from pre-rinsing dishes before loading your dishwasher. Modern dishwasher detergent is designed to interact with food particles on your dirty dishes, so rinsing them beforehand may actually lessen the effectiveness of the detergent and cleaning cycle. Amana dishwashers are designed to help you get clean and dry dishes, and most models have sensors that determine how dirty your dishes are and adjust the Normal cycle to help ensure optimal cleaning.
