Tarnishing of Cooking Utensils

Possible Solution

Why are the cooking utensils tarnishing?

Silver cutlery can become discolored yellow or brown and in extreme cases may even turn black. This can be caused by the following:

  • Chlorides or sulfides in the water, possibly from food (salt, eggs, mustard etc.)
  • Metal interaction from silver touching stainless steel
  • Natural oxidation

Resolution

Once tarnished, silver can be restored by using special cleaners such as silver polish. Prevent the problem by keeping silver items away from other types of metals and minimize the number of food soils containing salt, mustard, and eggs. Keep silver stored in a closed box to minimize oxidation in air.
