Vibration - Washing Multiple Items

Possible Solutions

Is the washer out of balance?

Review Washer is Unbalanced or Overloaded for how to correct out-of-balanced loads and how to prevent them from occurring.

Suppose the load is not evenly distributed in the basket when spinning begins. In that case, an “off-balance” load can create movement in the basket, resulting in noise, vibration, reduced spin speed, longer cycle times, and decreased washer performance. The error typically occurs during the spin part of the cycle, after the wash portion has completed.

Signs of an unbalanced load washer include loud noises during the spin cycle, excessive shaking, and clothes remaining wet after the cycle is complete. These indicators suggest that your laundry is not evenly distributed. In some instances, your washer may stop spinning if a significant imbalance is detected, requiring you to redistribute the load manually.

If the washer detects an “out-of-balance” load, it will try to self-correct by refilling the washer and gently rotating back and forth. During this self-correction cycle, the wash is attempting to redistribute the clothing inside the washer basket evenly. If the washer fails to level or even out the load during the self-correction cycle, it will display an error message.

Is the washer level?

The washer must be level, and all four washer feet must be in firm contact with the floor. Try to rock the washer diagonally, from corner to corner, with your hands.  If the washer rocks, it needs to be leveled.  If not properly leveled the load may become unbalanced, causing the machine not to spin correctly.  This can also cause the washer to make excessive noise and/or vibration, especially during the spin cycle.  Learn how to use your phone to level household appliances.

If a drain pan is used under the washer, the leveling legs may need to be adjusted outward to raise the machine's height.

Did you select the Bulky Cycle setting?

The bulky cycle is intended only for oversized, nonabsorbent items such as comforters, pillows, and poly-filled jackets. Washing other items in this cycle could create an unbalanced load or poor wash performance. Items not intended for this cycle could float above the impeller, unevenly distribute around the basket, and not agitate properly.

Always check the care label to ensure the item is machine washable in a top-load washer (some bulky items state to only wash in a front-load commercial-style washer).

Are heavy or large items being washed?

When washing large or heavy items, vibration and out-of-balance loads can occur. There are several things to consider for the best wash performance:

  • For items that absorb a lot of water, such as quilts or cotton blankets, distribute the items around the wash basket in a doughnut shape around the impeller.
  • It is not recommended to wash a single absorbent article. For example, Do not wash one rug. Wash two or three to balance the load for a good spin.
  • Similar items should be washed together. Make sure that the top of the impeller is visible.
  • Never overload the washer. Clothes should be loosely added and only as high as the top row of holes in the wash basket.
  • Do not add more water - there must be engagement of the impeller and the clothes. If there is too much water, the items will float, and the cleaning action will be less due to the design of the cycles.

Do you have a vibration in the washer basket?

The washer basket will move while the washer is operating. This is normal and is part of the washer's normal operation. The basket should move freely from front to back and left to right.
